AWS Announces Eighth European Region: Zurich New Entry Cloud

With the Swiss location, the total number of global regions rises to 27

The long-awaited news has finally arrived. In fact, it has been talked about for a long time and here it is that after the recent opening of the Italian Region in Milan, AWS has announced that Switzerland will also be home to a dedicated Region, to be precise Zurich will be the first Region Cloud in Switzerland. This long-awaited announcement brings the total number of global regions in operation and in the works to 27.

A very ambitious operation considering that Zurich is the second largest city in Switzerland and one of the largest financial centers in the world. In fact, the city is home to numerous financial institutions and banking giants, as well as most of the country’s research and development centers.

“For more than 14 years, AWS has supported organizations across nearly every industry in Switzerland to accelerate innovation, reduce IT costs, and transform their operations,” said Peter DeSantis, Senior Vice President of Global Infrastructure and Customer Support, Amazon Web Services, Inc. innovative startups and the world’s leading pharmaceutical companies to deliver cloud-based applications to fuel economic development across the country.”

AWS’ excellent newcomer will open in the second half of 2022 with three Availability Zones and will give developers, startups, and enterprises, as well as government, educational, and nonprofit entities the ability to run their applications and serve end users from data centers located in Switzerland.

This is great news considering that many Swiss companies were among the first to adopt cloud services in Europe when AWS was launched in 2006.

Well, now the Seattle giant arrives to activate the eighth European Region, which joins the existing ones of Dublin, Frankfurt, London, Paris, Stockholm, Milan and the one announced in Spain.

As usual, the new AWS Zurich Region will comprise three geographically separated Availability Zones, i.e. data centers.

The Seattle-based giant’s balance sheet is not bad at all considering that, currently, the company manages a global portfolio of 77 Availability Zones in 24 geographic regions with announced plans for an additional 12 Availability Zones and four additional AWS Regions in Switzerland, Indonesia, Japan, and Spain.
